Garter Belt
A garter belt (called a suspender belt in British English) is an undergarment worn around the waist with attached straps and clips that hold up stockings. Before the invention of pantyhose, garter belts were essential everyday wear for women.
How Garter Belts Work
A garter belt consists of a waistband with adjustable straps hanging from it. Each strap ends in a clasp or clip that attaches to the reinforced top (welt) of a stocking. Most garter belts have four straps—two for each leg, front and back—though some styles feature six or more for additional security.
Types of Garter Belts
Classic/Vintage Style
Wide elastic or satin belts with metal clips. Often feature decorative elements like lace trim, bows, or embroidery. Worn at the natural waist for authentic vintage looks.
Modern/Fashion Style
Slimmer designs in various materials including stretch lace, mesh, and satin. Often worn lower on the hips. Popular in lingerie sets.
Waist Cincher Style
Combines garter belt function with light shapewear. Wider panels that smooth the midsection while supporting stockings.
Garter Panties
Panties with built-in garter straps. Convenient two-in-one solution for everyday wear.
Garter Belt Clips
The metal or plastic fasteners that grip stocking welts come in several styles:
- Button clips: Traditional round metal clips with a rubber button that pushes through fabric
- Crocodile clips: Spring-loaded metal clips that grip fabric between teeth
- Adjustable straps: Most garter belts feature adjustable strap length for proper fit
How to Wear a Garter Belt
- Put on the garter belt first - Position at your waist before adding stockings
- Adjust strap length - Straps should be taut but not pulling when standing
- Put on stockings - Gather and roll up legs one at a time
- Attach front clips - Clip to stocking welt about 1-2 inches from top
- Attach back clips - Slightly higher than front for smooth line
- Put on underwear last - This allows for bathroom visits without removing stockings
Pro Tip
When sitting, slightly loosen front straps to prevent stockings from pulling. Well-adjusted garter straps should allow comfortable movement without stockings sliding down.
