Microfiber Hosiery

Microfiber is a synthetic fiber that is extremely fine—typically less than 1 denier per filament. In hosiery, microfiber creates an exceptionally soft, smooth fabric with a matte finish. Microfiber tights and pantyhose feel luxurious against the skin and provide even, streak-free color.

What Makes Microfiber Different

Microfiber yarn is much finer than regular nylon:

Fiber Type Denier per Filament
Human hair ~20 denier
Regular nylon 1.5-7 denier
Microfiber <1 denier
Ultrafine microfiber 0.1-0.5 denier

The finer the fiber, the softer and smoother the resulting fabric.

Benefits of Microfiber Hosiery

  • Ultra-soft feel: Silky smooth against skin
  • Matte finish: No shine, natural appearance
  • Even color: No streaks, blotches, or unevenness
  • Breathable: Fine fibers allow some air circulation
  • Lightweight warmth: Insulates without bulk
  • Durability: Densely packed fibers resist pilling

Microfiber Hosiery Types

Microfiber Tights

The most common microfiber application—opaque tights with velvety finish. Usually 40-80 denier. Premium feel and appearance.

Microfiber Pantyhose

Semi-sheer to opaque pantyhose. Softer than standard pantyhose, matte finish.

Microfiber Knee Highs

Comfortable daily option for under pants.

Microfiber Stockings

Less common but available—usually opaque styles.

Denier in Microfiber

Microfiber hosiery denier refers to the total thread thickness, not the individual filament size:

  • 40 denier microfiber: Semi-opaque, some transparency
  • 50-60 denier microfiber: Opaque, smooth coverage
  • 80+ denier microfiber: Dense opaque, winter weight

A 50 denier microfiber tight will be softer and more matte than a 50 denier regular nylon tight.

Caring for Microfiber

  • Hand wash recommended: Preserves soft finish
  • Cold water: Heat can damage microfibers
  • No fabric softener: Coats fibers, reduces softness
  • Air dry: Dryer heat is harmful
  • Inside out: Protects outer surface

Popular Microfiber Brands

Many hosiery brands offer microfiber lines:

  • Wolford (Velvet de Luxe)
  • Falke (Soft Merino, Pure Matt)
  • Commando
  • Hue (Opaque Tights)
  • Spanx (Tight-End Tights)

Quality varies significantly—premium brands use finer microfibers.

Why Matte Matters

Microfiber's matte finish looks more like fabric than traditional shiny hosiery. This makes microfiber tights easier to style—they look natural with any outfit rather than drawing attention to themselves.
