Silicone Band

A silicone band is the grip technology in hold-up stockings (also called stay-ups or thigh-highs). It's a strip of medical-grade silicone applied to the inside of the stocking top that gently adheres to skin, keeping the stocking in place without garters.

How Silicone Bands Work

The silicone creates friction against skin, working through:

  • Skin adhesion (not glue—leaves no residue)
  • Elastic tension in the band itself
  • Body heat softening the silicone slightly

Result: Stockings stay up through movement without sliding.

Types of Silicone Bands

Single Band

  • One strip of silicone inside
  • Standard in most hold-ups
  • Good for moderate activity

Double Band

  • Two parallel strips
  • Extra security
  • Better for active wear or larger thighs

Wide Band

  • Broader silicone coverage
  • Distributes pressure
  • More secure but can be warmer

Patterned/Partial

  • Dots or strips rather than full strip
  • More breathable
  • May be less secure

Making Silicone Bands Work

For Best Grip

  • Clean, dry skin: No lotion where band sits
  • Right size: Too tight = slides down; too loose = slides down
  • Proper placement: On flattest part of thigh
  • Body temperature: Bands work better once warmed

What Affects Grip

Helps Grip Reduces Grip
Dry skin Lotions, oils
Correct size Wrong size
Average/muscular thighs Very thin thighs
Limited activity Very active movement
Clean silicone Worn-out silicone

Troubleshooting

Stockings Sliding Down

  • Apply lotion AFTER removing stockings, not before wearing
  • Try a smaller size
  • Look for double-band styles
  • Make sure silicone isn't worn out

Silicone Causing Irritation

  • Try a different brand (silicone quality varies)
  • Look for hypoallergenic options
  • Consider lace-top styles without silicone (with garter belt)
  • Sensitive skin may do better with pantyhose

Caring for Silicone Bands

To maintain grip:

  • Hand wash gently—silicone can degrade
  • Avoid fabric softener (coats silicone)
  • Air dry only
  • Store flat or loosely rolled

Silicone-Free Alternatives

If silicone doesn't work for you:

  • Garter belts with regular stockings
  • Elastic-only tops (less secure)
  • Body adhesive (temporary solution)
  • Pantyhose instead
