How to Put On Stockings
Putting on stockings incorrectly causes most runs and damage. Master the proper technique and your hosiery will last much longer—plus you'll avoid the frustration of snagging a brand-new pair.
Before You Start
Hand Preparation
- Remove all rings: Every ring, including wedding bands
- Check your nails: File any rough edges smooth
- Moisturize: Rough, dry hands snag delicate fabric
- Avoid fresh manicure: Wet polish can transfer; sharp edges catch
Foot Preparation
- Trim toenails: Short and smooth
- File rough spots: Heels, calluses, any rough skin
- Ensure feet are dry: Damp feet make stockings hard to put on
- No lotion on feet: Makes fabric slide and bunch
The Gather-and-Roll Method
This technique minimizes stress on the fabric:
Step 1: Gather the Stocking
- Insert both hands into the stocking
- Reach all the way down to the toe
- Gather all the fabric up into your hands
- Roll the stocking down to just the toe portion
You should end up holding a compact "doughnut" of fabric with just the toe exposed.
Step 2: Insert Your Foot
- Point your toes
- Slide your foot into the toe opening
- Ensure the heel pocket aligns with your heel
- Adjust until toes are properly seated
Never force your foot—if it's not going in smoothly, re-gather and try again.
Step 3: Unroll Up the Leg
- Slowly unroll the fabric up your ankle
- Continue up the calf, releasing fabric gradually
- Smooth with the palms of your hands (not fingers)
- Stop at the proper position on your thigh
Never pull or yank—let the fabric unroll naturally.
Step 4: Final Adjustments
- Smooth any wrinkles at the ankle
- Ensure the heel pocket is centered
- Check that the welt is level around your thigh
- For seamed stockings, straighten the seam
Special Considerations
Seamed Stockings
Seamed stockings require extra care:
- Locate the seam: Position it at back center before putting on
- Keep it straight: Check alignment as you unroll
- Final adjustment: Check in mirror from behind
- Heel positioning: Cuban heels must be centered
Hold-Ups (Stay-Ups)
Hold-ups have silicone bands:
- Clean skin: Silicone won't grip lotion or oily skin
- Position carefully: Hard to adjust once in place
- Same level: Both stockings should be at equal height
With a Garter Belt
When wearing with a garter belt:
- Put on garter belt first (over underwear)
- Lengthen straps fully
- Put on stockings using gather-and-roll method
- Attach front garter clips first
- Attach back clips
- Adjust strap length for comfortable tension

Common Mistakes
What NOT to Do
- Pulling from top: Stretches and stresses fabric
- Using fingertips: Nails catch easily
- Rushing: Leads to snags and runs
- Bunching: Creates weak spots
- Wearing too small: Excessive stretch shortens life
- Wet feet: Makes positioning difficult
Troubleshooting
Stocking Twists as You Put It On
- Stop and remove carefully
- Re-gather and start again
- Pay attention to heel pocket alignment
Toe Seam Not Aligned
- Remove and re-apply
- Position toe seam before inserting foot
- Check alignment before unrolling up leg
Wrinkles at Ankle
- Smooth down with palms
- May indicate wrong size (too long)
- Can happen with wear—normal with some styles
Back Seam Crooked
- Adjust by gently twisting at the thigh
- May need to remove and reapply
- Have someone help check from behind
Removing Stockings Safely
Taking them off properly matters too:
- Unclip garters (if wearing)
- Roll down from the top, don't pull
- Gather fabric as you go down
- Ease off the foot gently
- Never pull from the toe
Practice Makes Perfect
Tips for beginners:
- Practice first: Try with cheap hosiery before expensive pairs
- Allow time: Don't rush when you're learning
- Sit down: Easier than standing, especially with garter belts
- Good lighting: See what you're doing
- Gloves: Some wear cotton gloves for ultra-sheer stockings
Quick Reference
- Remove rings, file nails
- Gather stocking to toe
- Insert pointed foot
- Unroll up leg slowly
- Smooth with palms only
